Ohm'art

I'm an elementary art teacher.

I have the best job on earth.

I teach at 3 schools. No art rooms- its art on a cart minus the cart. (I get a cart at the school with no stairs). 900 kids- 42 classes a week, 30 minutes each.

School stats:
22% white, 66% black, 2% hispanic
89.5% at/below poverty

  • Code Blue

Today we had a Code Blue drill. Code Blue is called when there’s a potential threat to students and staff- school shooter/custody battle/random violence type of situation.

I didn’t know it was a drill, I hoped that it was but I had no way of knowing so I had to assume it was real. We have had scares before.

I was in a kindergarten classroom so the kids and I had to get in the corner out of window view and sit quietly. The kids could tell by my face that it was serious so most of them were super-silent. A few were all about playing games but after hearing my rarely-used super serious-sharp voice they were fabulously quiet.

It was a drill thank goodness- I do not like being scared for my students’ safety and I hope it never happens for real.
